2018 Summer Meals Menus & Locations

VUSD is also promoting a meals location finder provided by the CA Dairy Council. By texting FOOD (English) or COMIDA (Spanish), to 877-877, users will receive information on locations closest to them.

Our WaveCrest Cafe team will be hard at work, feeding up to 8,000 lunches a week. The district’s Summer Meals program, operated through the USDA, launches June 8th and runs through August 10th, at 16 locations across the Vista and Oceanside communities that we serve.

While most summer meals locations are at VUSD schools, we do work with community partners to offer meals in some other spaces as well.

The Boys & Girls Club of Vista is one of two locations the district works with outside of traditional school sites, with Vista’s Luz Duran Park being another popular spot. “While we serve summer meals at many of our school sites, we also recognize that members of the community gather in other places, and we’re happy and willing to bring our fresh, healthy and delicious meals to those places,” says VUSD Director of Child Nutrition Services Jamie Phillips.

“Statistically, just 1 out of 7 children who qualify for free or reduced meals during the school year eats a summer lunch,” says Phillips. “We’d like to close that gap and provide that nutrition to the communities and children that we serve.”

The meals at Luz Duran Park have become a time for families to gather and have a picnic style lunch in a familiar and inviting atmosphere. This year, the district is working with the Vista Community Clinic to provide other health and wellness services, like dental screenings.

Each site operates during days and times that are most needed and accessed for the location. Some, like the Boys & Girls Club, will serve meals the entire June 8 – August 10 window, while others operate during shorter windows of time based on historical patterns of attendance.

The district is working to make information about the program as accessible as possible. Schedules and menus are posted on the WaveCrest Cafe website, and shared via emails and handouts to parents and families from each school.

“We want this program to have as few barriers as possible,” says Phillips. “And so any way that we can reach our community and make this program easy and accessible is beneficial to everyone.” To that end, program directors note that meals are available to all children 18 & under, and no forms or paperwork will be required.

The USDA Summer Meals Program is a national program, and access to nutritious meals is a priority for school districts everywhere.

Q: What is the goal of summer school?

A: The goal of summer school is to support students in completing their 6th/7th grade power focus areas before they start the next grade level in the fall.

Q: What are the dates and times of summer school?
A: Summer school will be the middle 2 weeks of June from 8:00am-12pm.
M-F, June 11-15
M-F, June 18-22

Q: Which students will be invited to summer school?

A:

6th Grade: Any student who is behind in any PFAs in any one class.

7th Grade:

ELA/History: More than one PFA behind

Math: Any PFA’s behind

Science: Fukuda: 4 or less PFA’s, Diaz: D or F in Aeries

Q: For 7th grade, what is the expectation for students who do not complete everything but are not in summer school because of the above caveats?
A: Students that are only one focus area behind in any specific class will not have to attend summer school for that class, however they will be responsible for completing that focus area before they can begin 8th grade curriculum when they return in the fall. Students are highly encouraged to study over the summer and come to the first day of school ready to complete any leftover 7th grade power focus areas.

Q: What is the deadline for getting “caught up”?

A: The blue line will pass all focus areas on Wednesday, May 30th. At the end of the day on Thursday, May 31st, we will pull student data on power focus areas and finalize our list of students. Official summer school notices will be sent home by mentors soon afterwards.

Q: When will official summer school notices be sent home?

A: As soon as possible after May 31st. Mentors will be given a list of students to notify, both by a letter sent home and a phone call to confirm.

Q: What if a student gets “caught up” between May 31st and the last day of school?

A: If a student gets caught up, they should contact their mentor, who will take them off the summer school list and send a “dismissal note” note home to confirm with parents.
